About Us

Founded in 1993, the Ukiah School of Music fosters musical growth in the local community.

Active partners Tom Ganoung (piano) , Michael Coughenour (piano), and Matt Cameron (guitar), with a cooperative of inspiring, and talented musicians boasting collectively over 100 years of teaching experience, operate the successful USM. They offer instruction in piano and nearly all band and orchestral instrument pursuits — as well as the study of vocal, guitar, bass and drum music.

June of 1993 saw the beginnings of Ukiah School of Music, established by local musicians and instructors Coughenour, Ganoung, and Marilynn Tollefson (piano). One by one more teachers for different instruments were added to the faculty, including Cameron for guitar, bass, drums and more, Marcia Sloane (cello), and Audrey Kircher Gramke (flute).

On January 1, 2005, USM moved into its present day space at 333 North Oak Street, sponsored by Peter Richardson of Rainbow Construction and now Savings Bank of Mendocino County.

In addition to music lessons, USM also offers recording and performance services in and around Lake and Mendocino counties, and provides string instrument rentals in partnership with Gobbi St Strings.
